Whale watching from La Paz: Gray whales at Puerto Chale
From December to March, gray and humpback whales gather off Baja to breed and rest. How to see them at Puerto Chale on a full day from La Paz, and what to bring.

Every winter, gray and humpback whales come to Baja to breed and rest. Gray whales make one of the longest migrations of any mammal, traveling from cold northern feeding waters to Baja's sheltered lagoons. For a few months each year, mothers and newborn calves are close enough to watch from a small boat.
From La Paz, our whale watching day trip goes to Puerto Chale. This guide explains when to go, how the day works, what you may see, and a longer option if one day is not enough.
When is whale watching season?
Our Whale Watching trip runs from December to March. That is when gray and humpback whales gather off Baja on their winter migration.
If you want more time with the gray whales, our Grey Whale Sanctuary expedition runs from January to March.
Where is Puerto Chale, and how do you get there?
Puerto Chale is at the southernmost part of Bahía Magdalena, on the Pacific side of the peninsula. The drive from La Paz takes about 2 hours each way.
Transport from downtown La Paz is an optional extra. If you add it when you request your place, we meet in downtown La Paz and travel to Puerto Chale together. If you plan to drive yourself, message us first.
How long is the trip?
It is a full day, about 8 to 9 hours. That is roughly 2 hours of driving each way and about 4 hours of whale watching.
What might I see?
Breaches, spy-hops, and mothers with newborn calves. A breach is when a whale launches its body out of the water. A spy-hop is when it rises vertically and lifts its head above the surface to look around.
None of it is guaranteed. We don't control marine life, so we never promise to see any animal.
Everything is watched from aboard the boat. You cannot snorkel on this trip. We watch from a respectful distance, with expert guides.
Can you touch the whales?
Our recommendation is not to touch the whales. It follows the philosophy behind every trip we run: "The best interaction with wildlife is one in which the animal never had to change its behavior because of our presence."
We do not chase whales or crowd them. We let them decide what happens next. When a mother and calf are calm around the boat, that is the encounter at its best.
How the trip works
Groups are small, with a maximum of 8 guests. You can take a shared place and join other ocean lovers, or book the boat privately for just your group.
A certified guide is with you, and our guides speak fluent Spanish and English. Lunch, snacks and drinks are included, along with photos and video of the trip. You can also bring your own camera, and a professional photo package can be added when you request your place.
The trip is open to all levels. No swimming is involved, which makes it a good choice for travelers who prefer to stay dry.
What to bring
Warm clothing is a requirement for this trip. Winter mornings on the water can feel cold, even in Baja. Also bring reef-safe sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses.
Gratuities are not included. You can pay by card.
Want more time? The Grey Whale Sanctuary expedition
For travelers who want to go deeper, the Grey Whale Sanctuary is a dedicated expedition to the gray whale nurseries.
It does not go to Puerto Chale. It goes to the north of Bahía Magdalena, near Puerto San Carlos, where gray whales raise their calves. Encounters there can be close, gentle and curious. They are among the most moving wildlife experiences in Baja.
The expedition lasts 5 days and runs from January to March, for up to 8 guests. Accommodation, all meals, transport, an experienced expedition leader, and photos and video of the expedition are included. Flights are not. Pack warm and waterproof clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses.
You can join a shared group or ask for a private expedition, tailored to your group's needs and expectations.
Which option is right for me?
Choose Whale Watching if you are based in La Paz and want to see whales in a single day. Choose the Grey Whale Sanctuary if seeing gray whales and their calves is a main reason for your trip to Baja, and you want several days with them.
